About Crested Butte

photo by Tricia SeebergWe rest in the shadow of a sleeping giant, at the end of a highway that eventually disappears into the wilderness, in a town that’s rich in history and community. When we’re not at rest, we scramble over scree fields in search of raspberries, or run laps on Mt. Crested Butte when snow pounds the mountain. We travel dirt roads and singletrack on bikes, hikes, horseback, and more in search of unexplored peaks and valleys. We ski in world-renowned backcountry. We throw a pack on our back to spend a few days deep in the woods around a campfire. We rest, and do it all over again.

We do all this in Crested Butte, Colorado, a place some say is the most beautiful place on earth. Our town is at the end of a valley, surrounded by wilderness, so we wake up each day to a grand sky and towering peaks. With any luck in winter, we can’t see a lick beyond our front yard through the curtain of snow that falls. As the Wildflower Capital of Colorado, no one can beat our summers for viewing the abundance of flowers we have at every elevation. And since they bloom long beyond your typical summer season, you’re sure to find some blossoms when you come for the intense change of colors in the fall.

Informally labeled “The Last Great Colorado Ski Town,” Crested Butte is a National Historic District, with a history in mining that goes back to the 1800s. A walk down our main street, Elk Avenue, gives a glimpse of the old days, with most of the surrounding houses retaining the architectural influences from that era. Charm oozes out of the sidewalks, the wood beams, and the bridges over the creek that runs through town. And you’ll often get a friendly wave from localsriding around on their townies or catching some sun on a bench.

photo by Karina SteeleOur backyard is a playground for anyone who wants to be outside. Whether you’re a hard core adventurer or one who prefers quiet strolls, we have something for everyone. Explore our terrain from a mountain bike on our extensive trail system, or venture out on foot and camp under more stars than you’ll ever see in your life. Winter brings skiing in all its forms: alpine, telemark, skate skiing, Nordic styles, and the relatively young freeskiing/terrain park type twin-planking. Not into skiing? Don’t forget how much more you can see simply by strapping some snowshoes to your feet.

We hope your stroll through our website is as informative, valuable, andworthy as if you walked into our store. We have Local Events so youcan see the wide array of things going on. You can learn more about our favorite activities, mountain biking and Telemark skiing, which happen to be our specialties. You can even find a place to stay in Accommodations. If you want help with your adventure while you’re here, visit Guide Services, which lists some folks for hire. And of course, feel free to drop us an email with more questions or comments, or requests for the inside scoop. We love to share our knowledge of Crested Butte and the surrounding area and hope you’ll pop in and say hello on your next visit or shopping excursion!
